Floods

Flooding is the most common disaster in Vermont with the greatest loss of property and life. The proximity of the Connecticut and West rivers and their tributaries put low-lying areas at risk during heavy rain storms and winter snow melt when flash floods are a danger. The most devastating flood in the area was in 1927,which led to the building of dams along the state's rivers, including Townshend and Ball Mountain dams on the West River.
