Steps to Safety
Extreme Heat
- Stay indoors, avoiding exposure to the sun.
- Close drapes, shades or shutters and lower awnings to keep out heat from the sun.
- Use fans or air conditioning, or stay in basement or lowest floor.
- Take cool showers.
- Eat light meals and drink plenty of fluids.
- Dress in lightweight, light-colored clothing.
- Wear a wide-brimmed hat outside.
- Never leave children or pets alone in closed vehicles.
- Avoid strenuous exercise.
- Limit alcohol and caffeine, which are diuretics and increase the risk of dehydration.
