Livestock
Did You Know?
An increased health problem can occur when stagnant atmospheric conditions trap pollutants in urban areas, thus adding contaminated air to excessively hot temperatures.
The following guidelines will help you prepare to keep livestock—such as horses, cattle, sheep, goats or pigs—safe in the event of an emergency:
- Make sure all animals have identification.
- If you are advised to shelter-in-place, shelter your livestock, too. Give them stored feed and water from a covered source.
- In the event of an evacuation, evacuate livestock whenever possible, mapping out routes in advance and using appropriate vehicles and trailers.
- Make sure your destination will have the necessary water, food, equipment and veterinary care for your animals.
- If you can’t evacuate your livestock, you must decide, depending on the type of emergency, whether to shelter them or turn them outside.
