Important items to keep in a home emergency supply kit include:
- Portable radio, flashlight and extra batteries
- First-aid kit
- Hygiene items, such as hand wipes or hand sanitizer and toilet paper
- Matches
- Commercially bottled and unopened water and juices
- Ready-to-eat canned meats, fruits and vegetables
- Canned milk and soups
- Non-electric can opener
- High-energy foods like peanut butter, jelly, crackers, granola bars or trail mix
- Infant formula and baby food
- Food for people requiring special diets
- Prescription medications and contact lens solutions
- Pet food, if you have pets
- Blankets and/or sleeping bags
- Fill plastic jugs with tap water to help flush toilets. Make sure this water is not used for drinking.
- Plastic sheeting, duct tape, scissors
